Skip S I'm hesitant to give a simple yes or no answer to your question. Instead, I would recommend that you look into a book called Mastering Diabetes, by Cyrus Khambatta and Robby Barbaro. They go through the scientific research that shows how a high fat diet causes insulin resistance. If a person is in an insulin resistant state, then the sugar found in fruit will cause blood glucose to spike. However, it's possible to reverse insulin resistence, in which case fruit can be safely consumed.

Julie C Hi Jerri, I think some fruits like berries can be part of a healthy diet for diabetics. It's the added sugars and refined carbs that can cause a lot of problems! Fruit has a more natural form of sugar plus nutrients and fiber. Good luck!

Angela C Great question Jerri! I would highly suggest talking to your primary doctor or a registered dietitian. This is so they can give you the right answer and provide you with the right foods to eat for your specific dietary needs.

Sara D Fruit can be okay for diabetics because it also contains fiber, which slows the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. Eating it with a protein (like cheese) and limiting the portion size to a single serving also helps. Even so, for some diabetics, fruit can be problematic. If you can, check your blood sugar after eating a meal with fruit to see how your body responds.
